Affirmative Action Committee members hear speakers, make plans
UUP Affirmative Action Committee members Ben Williams, Tina Marie Manning and Lydia Johnson, right, listen as Charlie Williams, Region II director for the American Association for Affirmative Action, speaks at the committee’s Aug. 27 meeting.
Committee members learned what SUNY is doing to advance affirmative action programs and services on its campuses and the difference between diversity and affirmative action during the committee’s annual two-day retreat, held Aug. 27-28 in Saratoga Springs.
About 15 committee members attended the work sessions, led by statewide Vice President for Professionals Philippe Abraham; he serves as Executive Board Liaison to the committee.
Williams, who is also Affirmative Action Director at Kean University in New Jersey, spoke to the committee about diversity, affirmative action and the differences between them. Committee members also participated in a brainstorming session on affirmative action programs on SUNY campuses. Carlos Medina, SUNY associate provost and associate vice chancellor, Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion, and SUNY Affirmative Action Officer Gloria Lopez also addressed the committee on Aug. 27.
Committee co-chairs Cheryl Hamilton and Darleyne Mayers led a strategic planning session on Aug. 28 to help set the committee’s agenda and chart its plan of action for 2012-13.
