Union builds leadership skills

uupdate 4-8-13

Dozens of UUP members participate in a communications workshop led by UUP Publications Specialist Karen Mattison during UUP’s leadership workshops in Bolton Landing.

About 140 members attended the union’s first-ever, three-day conference that included the leadership workshops and a retreat for chapter presidents and vice presidents. The April 5-7 meeting marked the first time the union conducted the leadership workshops on an annual basis.

In addition to “Chapter Building through Communications,” seven other workshops were offered. They focused on the Taylor Law, problem-solving techniques, grievance procedures, developing chapters’ strategic plans, leave provisions, academic appointment and reappointment, and guiding professionals through their careers.

UUP President Phil Smith led the chapter president and vice presidents retreat, covering such issues as UUP’s tentative agreement with the state and the union’s legislative agenda.
