Delegates elect officers, Executive Board members
Delegates to the 2013 Spring Delegate Assembly line up to elect a new leadership team during the union’s two-day policymaking convention May 3-4 in Albany
Fred Kowal of Cobleskill was elected as president and begins serving a two-year term June 1; he defeated Wes Kennison of Geneseo, 233-89. Kowal replaces president Phil Smith of Upstate Medical University, who is retiring after five years at the helm.
Delegates re-elected Secretary Eileen Landy of Old Westbury, who ran unopposed. Edison Bond Jr. of Downstate Medical Center was re-elected as membership development officer. He defeated Executive Board member Robert Rees of Alfred, 174-143. Both were elected to two-year terms.
Mike Lyon of Upstate Medical University was elected to the Executive Board to fill the board seat vacated by Kowal. Lyon’s term runs through May 31, 2014. All of the other board seats are for two-year terms.
Three incumbent board members are returning: Dave Curry of Plattsburgh, Laura Rhoads of Potsdam and Arty Shertzer of Stony Brook ran unopposed.
Newly elected to the board was Anne Wiegard of Cortland, who ran unopposed.
Also new to the board are Darleyne Mayers of Farmingdale, who defeated Tom Hoey of Albany, 151-136; Beth Wilson of New Paltz, over Ezra Zubrow of Buffalo Center, 132-125; and Lori Nash of Oswego, over incumbent Jacqui Berger of Empire State College, 141-121.
Yolanda Pauzé of Farmingdale was elected to the board to represent specialized colleges. She defeated Berger and Rafael Romero of Utica/Rome, 184-84-32, respectively.
The more than 330 delegates also adopted an $8.2 million annual operating budget, debated nine resolutions and special orders of business, heard reports from officers, and attended dozens of committee meetings.
