ESC Chapter’s Executive Board, UUP statewide officers meet
Empire State College Chapter President Pamela Malone, right, chats with UUP President Fred Kowal, center, Vice President for Professionals Philippe Abraham, and Secretary Eileen Landy. The officers, including Vice President for Academics Jamie Dangler, attended ESC’s summer retreat July 9 in Latham.
More than 20 chapter members attended the two-day session July 9-10, held at NYSUT’s statewide headquarters in Latham. Improving communications with UUP’s statewide officers and finding effective ways to work with the union on a statewide level was a focus of the retreat.
Kowal welcomed ESC members and called on them to play an important role in the union’s advocacy effort. The chapter, with members across the state, can be effective in spreading UUP’s message to legislators in their home offices.
“This chapter is going to be critical,” said Kowal. “We’re going to need you. This is our fight and it’s a fight we’re going to take on together, and a fight we’re going to win.”
ESC Chapter President Pamela Malone said the meeting was beneficial because it gave ESC chapter members a chance to talk with UUP’s statewide officers and ask questions.
“These are the folks on the ground who are meeting one-on-one with members in their areas, and we want to make sure they have everything they need and that they feel connected to UUP central,” Malone said. “I think it’s important for the people at the chapter level to know what’s happening at the statewide level and be familiar with the officers and the work they do for our members.”
ESC Chapter members attended several workshops on July 10 dealing with grievance procedures, and issues for academics and professionals.
