Leaders train for contract implementation
Newly elected Utica/Rome Chapter President Linda Weber, left, asks a question during a training session on the implementation of contract provisions in the 2011-2016 bargaining agreement between UUP and the state.
Dozens of new and veteran chapter leaders—including Stony Brook HSC Chapter President Carol Gizzi, center, and Upstate Medical University Chapter President Mike Lyon—came together Aug. 18 in Lake George, to get the training they need to monitor the implementation of specific contract provisions. Topics included on call/recall pay, the distribution of discretionary money to part-time and full-time employees, and how the two days off in lieu of pay will be handled at the campus level.
Training also covered Appendix A-28 issues, ranging from professionals’ performance programs, evaluations and promotions, to the potential use of grievances to address infractions.
Kathy Briggs and Pat Domaratz, NYSUT labor relations specialists assigned to UUP, and NYSUT Associate Director of Staff John Marino, conducted the training. Also on hand was statewide VP for Academics Jamie Dangler, who served as the union’s chief negotiator for the five-year pact.
UUP President Fred Kowal noted that chapter leaders should consult labor relations specialists for assistance in labor/management discussions and when addressing individual issues at the chapter level.
“We will continue to develop clear contract implementation plans and guidelines for our chapters, and we will share these with chapter leaders during regional meetings this fall,” Kowal said.
