VPP committee to offer training, tips for success
Statewide VP for Professionals Philippe Abraham, left, discusses possible workshop topics with chapter VPPs Jeri O’Brien-Losee of Morrisville and Charlie McAteer of Stony Brook, right.
The trio joined other VPP Steering Committee members Nov. 4-5 in Albany, where they reached consensus on training, communication and membership development plans for newly elected chapter VPPs. Nearly one-third of the union’s VPPs were elected to their first term in June.
“We need to give chapter VPPs everything they need to know to better serve their members,” said Abraham, who chaired the meeting. Training and avenues for communication are among the tools the committee hopes to provide.
Committee members put the finishing touches on a training workshop tentatively slated for mid-December. Workshop topics will range from the role of a chapter VPP and how to create chapter-based committees, to understanding promotions and evaluations, to connecting and communicating with members. NYSUT labor relations specialists assigned to UUP will also be asked to offer training on effective meetings, dealing with difficult people, and how UUP operates as an organization.
Also discussed were the best ways to share information among chapters and UUP statewide, and how an emphasis on a department or building rep system “will keep the information flowing in both directions,” Abraham added.
