Panel discusses edTPA at SUNY Brockport

VPA Jamie Dangler, right, and other panelists discuss the regulatory issues affecting teacher ed programs during a March 7 event at SUNY Brockport

Nearly 80 teacher education program administrators, educators and students from 20 public and private institutions spent the afternoon focusing on specific problems they’re having with the edTPA—a new performance-based assessment the State Department of Education (SED) has mandated for teacher certification, beginning with students graduating this spring.

From left are SUNY Brockport professor Christine Murray, who served as moderator; Brockport graduate student Jen Boerner; Donna Orioli, director of placement services at Nazareth College in Rochester; Christian Wilkens and Sheri Treadwell, assistant professors of teacher education at Brockport; and Dangler, chair of the union’s Teacher Education Task Force.

UUP and NYSUT have tried to convince SED that the edTPA was rolled out too quickly and without adequate faculty input. The edTPA’s high-stakes nature is a huge concern for the unions—and it is being echoed by a growing alliance of academic and professional faculty at public and private colleges, administrators and governance leaders, state lawmakers, students and their parents.

Panelists at the Brockport event shared their personal experiences dealing with the edTPA. Dangler was there to explain UUP’s seven-point action plan; she urged attendees to join the union in pressing legislators and Regents to demand SED remove the edTPA as a mandate for certification. The discussion was followed by breakout sessions on the best ways to generate support and action from inside and outside academe.

The Brockport Chapter of UUP, the union’s statewide Teacher Education Task Force, and the college’s School of Education and Human Services sponsored the event.
