Professionals pack conference in Buffalo

uupdate 5-2-14

VPP Philippe Abraham hosts a record turnout of professional members at UUP’s Conference for Western New York Professionals.

Nearly 150 members assembled June 4 in Buffalo for the third annual conference. Professionals from six chapters got an overview on performance programs, evaluations, promotions and salary increases as covered in UUP’s 2011-16 contract with the state.

Statewide Membership Development Officer Edison Bond, Jr., Executive Board member Idalia Torres of Fredonia, and the presidents of the Buffalo Center, Buffalo State, Buffalo HSC and Geneseo chapters attended.

“The goal is to educate all of our professionals, so they know all of what the contract offers,” Abraham said of the conference.

NYSUT Labor Relations Specialists Tara Singer-Blumberg and Ed Giblin provided an overview of the contract and what changed in the latest agreement.

Members appreciated the opportunity to learn.

“As director of residence life, this meeting helps me manage my staff when they ask about promotions and salaries,” Michael Heflin of Buffalo State said.

“This conference has helped me, as a supervisor, develop performance programs and evaluations more accurately,” Darlene Mercado, left, of Buffalo Center said.

The Buffalo conference marked the first of four regional meetings for professionals. Conferences are scheduled for June 7 on Long Island, June 17 in Syracuse and June 18 in Plattsburgh.
