Abraham named to NYSUT Board of Directors
Vice President for Professionals Philippe Abraham is one of two new higher ed representatives appointed to the NYSUT Board of Directors.
At its Aug. 11 meeting, the board filled two new at-large seats it created with Abraham and Professional Staff Congress/CUNY Treasurer Michael Fabricant. The men will serve through NYSUT’s Representative Assembly in 2017.
At that time, both positions will be up for election; each carries a three-year term.
“I’m looking forward to representing the interests of higher education on the NYSUT Board of Directors,” said Abraham.
The NYSUT board created the higher ed positions to account for an increase in members at SUNY state-operated and community colleges and the City University of New York. The new posts give higher ed balanced representation on the board.
The board has numerous powers and duties; among them are establishing NYSUT policy, and filling vacancies. The board needed a two-thirds vote and the NYSUT president’s recommendation to add the two higher ed board seats, according to NYSUT’s Constitution and Bylaws.
Abraham, a UAlbany Chapter member, was elected as UUP’s vice president for professionals in 2012. He was twice elected to UUP’s Executive Board and has chaired and co-chaired a number of UUP statewide committees. He is a delegate to NYSUT and AFT conventions and has served as a member of UUP’s Negotiations Team. Abraham is one of three elected senators representing UAlbany on SUNY’s Faculty Senate.
Fabricant was elected in 2008 as PSC/CUNY treasurer. He is the PSC’s representative to the AFT organizing committee, and he has served as treasurer of the National Coalition to House the Homeless and Community Access United.
