UUP aligns with NY Renews, urges state to grow offshore wind power
UUP has joined forces with NY Renews and its push to expand New York’s offshore wind industry.
UUP's Executive Board voted May 12 for UUP to link with NY Renews, a diverse coalition of environmentalists, labor unions, climate justice organizations, and faith-based groups with a goal to get New York state to rely on clean energy, to set a fair energy policy and create thousands of clean energy jobs statewide.
“We believe in what NY Renews espouses, so we were happy to become a part of this active grassroots push for the use of clean energy sources in New York,” said UUP President Fred Kowal. “If we want an equitable renewable energy future that creates good jobs around the state, it’s up to us to build it.”
More than 50 groups have affiliated with NY Renews, including NYSUT, 1199 SEIU, the New York State Nursing Association, and Citizen Action of New York.
UUP is advocating that the state make a strong, long-term investment in off-shore wind power, which would create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs across the state. The union supports Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Clean Energy Standard that will require 50 percent of the state’s electricity to come from renewable energy sources by 2030.
“This is a pivotal moment in New York’s energy future,” said Kowal. “The need for action on climate change and clean energy is not abstract—asthma rates, heat-related deaths, severe weather ranging from blizzards to Hurricane Sandy are literally life-and-death issues for our community."
