UUP, ESC hold 'Get out the Vote' drive
UUP members from Empire State College braved the rain in Saratoga July 9 to register new voters and encourage others to pledge to vote in the November election.
ESC Chapter President Pamela Malone, fellow chapter member Karen Garner and student Sue Lazar staffed a “Get out the Vote" booth at the Saratoga Farmer’s Market, handing out “Rock the Vote @ SUNY" T-shirts to anyone who registered to vote or pledged to vote on the Rock the Vote website.
The union has been a leader in the Rock the Vote campaign on SUNY campuses, and was quick to offer its support to the college's GOTV events
"This is a great collaboration between the college and UUP," said Malone, a statewide Executive Board member. “It shows the dedication of the employees at ESC, many of whom are our members, to get the message out about how important it is to vote.
“We often take this for granted in this country,” she added. “But it’s a right that we should exercise as a way to have a say in the issues that are important to us and in the running of our country. I am grateful to be a part of this effort.”
The GOTV event in Saratoga was organized by ESC Student Services and the student-led Lead In program. Lead In is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping women achieve their goals; Garner, above left, is the group's faculty advisor. Several other events are planned at ESC locations around the state.
