SUNY’s three public hospitals would be hit with hundreds of millions of federal funding cuts the Department of Health and Human Services approves a plan that would shift dollars away from the hospitals.

Those reductions in federal Disproportionate Share Hospital funding—which could be as much as $320 million—would financially devastate SUNY’s academic medical centers.

More than 15,000 UUP members work at SUNY’s hospitals and health sciences centers in Buffalo, Brooklyn, Stony Brook and Syracuse. Tens of thousands of patients rely on SUNY’s public hospitals for health care.

We need you to speak out against this plan by sending an electronic comment to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services via, an online government portal that provides information and allows public comment on proposed federal regulations.

The comment period ends at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 28. All comments must be filed by then.

In your comments, please discuss how a major loss in federal Medicaid dollars would hurt the hospital or health sciences center that you work at. Please provide details; discuss how patients would be impacted, how health care services would be diminished, and other losses your health care facility would absorb.

Why comment?

The allocation change in Medicaid DSH funds falls heaviest on states like New York, which expanded its Medicaid programs. Federal DSH Medicaid funds are used to reimburse public hospitals for the care they provide to patients without health insurance or who can’t otherwise afford to pay. No one is turned away from SUNY’s public hospitals.

By speaking out against this proposal, we can help ensure that that all New Yorkers are provided access to affordable, high-quality health care, whatever their income and wherever they live in our great state.
