UUP joins other unions to help save SUNY hospitals

UUP Vice President Fred Floss

UUP Vice President for Academics Fred Floss leads a rally Jan. 16 on the campus of Upstate Medical University in Syracuse protesting the recommendations of the Berger Commission. The panel called for privatizing the SUNY-operated hospital by having it merge with Crouse Hospital.

Floss joined fellow labor union brothers and sisters from CSEA, CWA, PEF and NYSUT to rally support for Upstate and for legislative efforts to amend the Berger Commission's findings to save the teaching hospital.

Floss exhorted the members at the rally to fight the Berger Commission recommendations and to continue the fight to the Capitol at Albany.

Floss walked to the rally with three CWA healthcare workers in the middle of their walk from Buffalo to Albany looking to muster support to change the panel's recommendations, which would pave the way for the privatization of the other two SUNY hospitals in Brooklyn and Stony Brook and an end to many of the life-saving clinical care services they provide. Their walk will end at the steps of the Capitol on the 26th of January.l concerns over proposals to merge or privatize the three SUNY-operated public hospitals as outlined in the Berger Commission report that became law on Jan. 1.
