UUP Communications Department

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What kinds of research does the UUP Research Department conduct?

A. The UUP Research Department carries out a wide variety of qualitative and quantitative research in support of UUP's agenda and the union's contract negotiations

Q. What kind of materials can be found in the UUP Research Department?

A. In the Research Department, we maintain extensive files on all issues relating to higher education and the labor movement, which contain materials gathered from newspapers, journals, books, reports and the Internet. In addition, the Research Department maintains a small library of periodicals and monographs, as well as databases of SUNY-related information such as faculty numbers, academic and professional salaries, enrollment, budgets and many other issues.

Q. Where would a UUP member find salary data?

A. Each SUNY campus has salary data from the state payroll on file. Contact your chapter president or labor relations specialist to find out how you can access this data. Another good source of comparative data on academic salaries across the SUNY system (as well as average salaries for all academic ranks nationwide) is the journal Academe, which publishes its Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession in the March-April edition. The UUP Research Department obtains data on annual average professional salaries from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).

Q. What facilities does the UUP Research Department have for conducting survey research?

A. During the fall semester the Research Department can assist chapters or committees that decide to do survey research. After a chapter or committee creates a survey instrument, we can offer suggestions in terms of layout and strategy in order to obtain the highest possible response rate and the most accurate results. The Research Department also has the capability for optical recognition (scanning) of survey results through a new computer program called Remark Office OMR. This program allows us to scan completed survey forms and to analyze the data in a variety of ways.
