UUP introduces new Web site
Information expands at an ever-increasing pace. And so does the need to manage it appropriately and effectively. To keep pace with information growth, UUP has made some changes to the “look and feel” of its Web site. Over the past several years, UUP’s Communications Department has won numerous national and international awards for its Web site’s design and navigation. In keeping with our philosophy that “getting lost is never fun,” .the familiar three-panel Homepage has been retained but has undergone a virtual face-lift. The main new navigation feature is a “Drop-down Menu” allowing members to quickly drill down into the core information that they need. A familiar left-hand NavBar provides an “at a glance” view of materials that are only a single click away. The middle panel now provides current, up-to-date visual and text information and stories that affect the working lives of UUP members. And the right-hand panel is home to information about UUP’s current publication activities. Also present in this panel is a powerful Search Engine, for those interested in a more detailed and in-depth exploration of our Web site.

How to use this site
The first question with this or any Web site is: How do the pages look and work with my browser?
The pages on this site were designed to work best with a screen resolution of 800 pixels in screen width, or greater. But the pages will also work with screen widths as low as 640 pixels. Obviously, the higher a screen resolution you use, the more information will be displayed on each page. But there's a trade-off, as text size decreases with increasing screen resolution. No doubt your screen resolution is already set to a comfortable level. But if you want to change it, it's fairly easy to do. With PCs running most versions of Windows, you simply "Right Click" on the empty desktop, select "Properties" in the drop-down context menu, and then click the "Settings" tab and move the slider bar to another screen resolution setting. For Macs using OS X, click on the System Preferences icon in the Dock and then click on "Displays" to select a new setting. If you're comfortable with your screen display/size but want to simply increase or decrease the text size, you can do so with controls in your browser. In most browsers, clicking on the "View" option of the menu bar (at the top of the screen) will offer a selection for changing text size. But your particular browser may vary on this point.
These pages "work" with both PCs and Macs using a variety of browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Safari, or Opera. You should know that Microsoft's Internet Explorer doesn't always "obey the rules" set by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the folks who set the standards for how Web browsers should behave and how Web pages should be designed. Therefore, many users have switched to the so-called "Open Access" browsers such as Mozilla Firefox. If you click the link to Firefox, you can download a FREE copy for either PCs or Mac. In fact, if you do so, you'll have an up-to-date browser that's safe and easy to use....and it'll give you the "full-feature" view of this Web site.
Navigation
The new UUP Web site uses a robust scheme for navigation between individual pages. The Homepage was designed to be the "starting point." An in-depth Drop-Down Menu will take you, the viewer, to all of the major pages that visitors have selected over the past several years (as based on extensive user/viewer stastics). The Drop-Down Menu appears ONLY on the Homepage. Also located on the Homepage is a familiar Left-hand NavBar containing many important links. This Left-hand NavBar also appears in each second-level page for ease of navigation. Third-level pages (or below) are content only pages. So, you ask:"How does one navigate?" Ah...read on!
Each page "below" the Homepage also contains powerful navigation tools, called "breadcrumbs." These are links that will take you back one page at a time or directly to the Homepage. For example, the graphic at the left is from one of the "Directory" pages. In the actual page, the breadcrumbs (in blue) for "Homepage" and "Officers" are clickable links that would take you back to either the page of Officers listings (which would be where you would have come from) or directly back to the Homepage.
If you click a link in one of this Web site's pages that takes you to another Web site, you can return to UUP's pages by clicking the "Back" button of your browser. Depending on how far you've gotten into that other Web site, you may have to click "Back" several times.
More information on how this Web site is put together can be seen by viewing our Site Map.
Finally, a word about Internet security: Computers using the Windows operating system (Win98, NT, 2000, or XP) are vunerable thousands of viruses and other malware. A complete discussion of computer security is outside the scope of this Web site, but there are many execellent rescources available. For example, PC Magazine's Web site offers timely reviews about these problems. Click Here to view PC Magazine's Security Tips.
We hope you'll enjoy using the UUP Web site. If you have an idea how we can make this site better, or if you find an error on one of our pages, please let us know by sending an email using the "Contact Us" link found on the Left-hand NavBar. Thanks!
