Statement from University Professions President Frederick E. Kowal on today’s NY Renews rally for the Climate and Community Protection Act

“The New York State Climate and Community Protection Act will go far in helping to protect the environment, today and into the future.

“UUP urges the Legislature and the governor to pass and sign this bill, which would provide a major boost to the green energy industry and create hundreds of thousands of good-paying green jobs statewide.

“As a NY Renews coalition member and the president of a union that represents thousands of members who are scientists, ecologists and workers in those fields, I can say definitively that the CCPA is legislation strongly supported by UUP and its members.

“If it becomes law, the CCPA would benefit workers by mandating that new energy jobs that get public funds meet fair labor standards. It would also protect and reinvest in communities dealing with the negative impact of climate change, an important reason why UUP is speaking out for this.

“UUP and its members stand proudly today with the hundreds of concerned citizens and environmental activists from across the state to come to Albany to push for this bill.

“This legislation promotes climate justice and major protections to the environment, while pushing New York state away from fossil fuels and toward a green energy economy.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees.
