Global Climate Strike - Support students, get involved

One week can make a huge difference in the fight against climate change.

So can one day.

On Friday, Sept. 20, students and young people across the U.S. and around the world will lead the fight to save the Earth as part of the Global Climate Strike, a high-stakes initiative to urge governments and leaders to take realsteps to end the use of fossil fuels and transition to renewable, sustainable energy sources that promote climate justice and equity.

The week of action will run through Sept. 27, with events scheduled across the state.

UUP President Fred Kowal called on UUP members to support students who are planning to take part in a Climate Strike event. He also urged members to attend an event and work with other UUPers to take action.

He amplified that message in a UUP-produced video, above, emailed to UUP leaders Sept. 11.

“Students will lead the Global Climate Strike, and we as UUP members have the opportunity to empower our students to change the world," said Kowal. "I am asking our members to provide support for planned student-led climate actions, to join the Strike and work with students to push for real solutions to the climate crisis.

Our communities, our planet, our students, and our future depend on a climate movement that reaches across borders, over barriers and cuts through political rhetoric. It won’t be easy, but working together, we can create the change we seek.”

Global Climate Strike events and actions are set to take place across New York on Sept. 20, including a huge rally in New York City's Foley Square with Swedish teen climate activist Greta Thunberg. Rallies and marches are also planned in Albany, Buffalo, Ithaca and Syracuse.
