CAREER PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

As a family, positions in the Career Planning and Development series have responsibility for assisting and counseling students in relation to a post-graduation placement program.

Director of Career Planning and Development: (SL-5)

Oversees and directs the operation of career planning and development office on a particular campus. Supervises a staff of subordinate professional and clerical employees involved in the career planning and development function. Due to the diversity of the student population, must deal with a wide variety of employers and employment issues. Develops and implements improved methods and programs to provide individual and group career counseling. Aids potential employers in the evaluation of candidates. Works with deans, chairman, major faculty members, and employers in developing information banks on career and position requirements and opportunities for college trained persons. Confers with administrators and employers concerning placement accomplishments, problems, and goals including identification of curriculum and extension needs to serve the public. Develops and submits budget recommendations and oversees the allocation of funds.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree and significant experience in career counseling and placement. Managerial and supervisory experience is required.

Career Planning and Development Officer: (SL-4)

May be distinguished from a Director of Career Planning and Development in that incumbents typically perform the career planning and development function alone, with no other professional staff. Career Planning and Development Officers are generalists solely performing the full array of responsibilities of the office. Supervision may be exercised over support staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree and significant experience in career counseling and placement.

Assistant Director of Career Planning and Development: SL-4)

Serves as second in charge of a career planning and development office. Can perform all the duties of the Director. In addition, the Assistant is responsible for a segment of the career planning and development process, such as the day-to-day operation of the career planning and development center, coordination of career seminars, or the researching, compilation, and dissemination of employment trends, employer needs, and other career related matters. May supervise clerical and student support staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree and significant experience in career counseling and placement. Supervisory skills are strongly recommended.

Senior Career Planning and Development Associate: (SL-3)

The Senior Career Planning and Development Associate is involved in all aspects of the Career Planning and Development office including career counseling/life planning, placement, recruitment, and employment referrals.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to: providing counseling to assist in the planning and implementation of educational, occupational, and life goals; aiding in the awareness and understanding of alternatives and implications involved in career decision-making counseling and assisting students and alumni in planning and implementing the search for employment or graduate schools; serves as a liaison with prospective employers; organizes and provides workshops, seminars, and other courses to students on the subject of job search skills, labor market demands, interviewing skills, etc.; administers and interprets results of appropriate instruments used in self-assessment, career-exploration and decision-making; supervises interns, professional, clerical, and student staff in the absence of the Director and Assistant Director.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in a appropriate discipline and one year of relevant experience.

Career Planning and Development Associate: (SL-2)

Serves on the career planning and development staff. Coordinates activities involving the referral or students and alumni to professional employment and/or post-baccalaureate education. Meets with students and conducts workshops on employment information, interviewing techniques and resume preparation. Obtains and maintains information on career requirements and opportunities. Conducts reviews and evaluations of placement activities.

Career Planning and Development Assistant: (SL-1)

Serves on the career planning and development staff. Under direct supervision, performs work similar to a Career Planning and Development Associate while becoming familiar with the campus’ placement procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a Master’s degree in progress.
