INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT SERVICES

 

 

These positions provide skilled, specialized assistance to faculty, staff, students and various publics in instructional research, library services, and other educationally related programs or projects.

 

University Instructional Specialist: (SL—5)

Supervises the technical operation of a sophisticated laboratory or installation. Designs and supervises the construction of specialized equipment. Plans and supervises the design and conduct of series of experiments utilizing equipment and materials of the unit. The specialist utilizes experience or training in complex evaluative judgments of data and records. Provides consultation on development of instructional and research projects. These positions may involve responsibility for training students in the study of instructional or complex research equipment and, in many cases, will be the interface between resource equipment technology and its application to the instructional, research and public service mission areas of a campus.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Master’s degree and five (5) years experience in the appropriate discipline.

Instructional Support Specialist: (SL-4)

Serves on the instructional support staff. Incumbents of these positions complete the design and planning of experiments in a unit or laboratory combining several experimental programs. Plans and assigns work to staff working in laboratory or group setting. Maintains or supervises a sophisticated maintenance program involving critical equipment, plants, animals, microorganisms or other materials found in experiments. Advises on the use of equipment and materials in laboratory settings. Assists in the development of recommendations for laboratory improvements. These positions may be found in departmental instructional laboratories, commonly at senior division or graduate levels of instruction. They are of a specialized nature and the incumbents are expert in highly complex pursuits such as electron microscopy, nuclear acceleration, celestial and terrestrial optics, computer graphics, plate tectonics, and other sciences.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Master’s degree and three (3) years experience in the appropriate discipline.

Instructional Support Technician: (SL-3)

Serves on the instructional support staff. Under general supervision incumbents set up equipment and materials to carry out experiments. Conducts or supervises operation of experiments. The technician provides quality control of materials used in experiments. Provide advice and instruction in use of equipment materials, etc., and in the recording of determinations. Incumbents may interview, screen and instruct clients involved in research projects.

In a library, may catalog additions where problems are encountered in the record or where judgment and interpretation is required; assist patrons at the reference desk with little supervision required; work with specialized materials; conduct complete bibliographic searches and place complex orders; supervise professional and support staff.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years experience in the appropriate discipline.

Instructional Support Associate: (SL—2)

Serves on the instructional support staff. In addition to performing all the duties of the assistant, incumbents in these positions may assist in the formulation of program/project outlines, procedures and analysis of results. The associate sets up and maintains records, files and documents related to specific projects. Responds to inquiries and provides informational data in a specific subject area to staff inside and outside the university. Prepares slides, specimens and equipment for medical and scientific lectures, research and laboratory exercises. The associate also differs from the assistant in that the associate handles materials that may be fragile, expensive, toxic, volatile, noxious, flammable, or otherwise dangerous.

In a library, an associate may conduct preorder searches using on-line bibliographic databases and the public catalog; catalog books when fully acceptable; answer routine reference questions. An associate may assist a department head in performing routine administrative and supervisory functions.

Functional supervision may be exercised over clerical and support help.

Instructional Support Assistant: (SL-1)

Serves on the instructional support staff. Under direct supervision incumbents store, maintain, issue and set up specialized educational and research supplies and equipment. The assistant operates such equipment during demonstrations and lectures or instructs faculty or student assistants in the operation of such equipment. In addition, assistants conduct experiments, recording and analyzing the results under the supervision of senior instructional personnel. In a library, the duties may include basic on-line searching, cataloging and both written and verbal communication with supervisors, peers and support staff.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Associate’s degree in the appropriate discipline.
