PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING

As a family, the psychological counseling series provides students with a comprehensive campus counseling service including psychotherapy, personal counseling, educational and vocational counseling, and testing services.

Director of Counseling: (SL-6)

Plans, develops and maintains a comprehensive campus counseling service to include psychotherapy, personal counseling, educational, vocational, and testing services; coordinates the efforts of the Counseling Center with other Student Affairs offices and staff of the campus. Supervises professional and clerical staff of the Counseling Center. Provides psychotherapy and counseling to students, individually and in groups, to help them understand themselves and their environment to overcome academic, vocational, and personal problems. Provides a testing program for students to assist them in self-understanding and identification of strengths and interests. Develops and provides opportunities for group counseling and workshops in areas such as substance abuse, study skills, weight control, women’s concerns, human sexuality, time management, etc. Provides crisis counseling and counseling services for patients with acute psychological problems and works closely with Health Center personnel in the provision of these services. Provides for 24-hour counseling coverage to meet the emergency needs of students. Refers students for specialized and/or long-term treatment. Reviews and oversees the processing of non-academic aspects of student withdrawals and leaves of absence. Responds to parent concerns on student’s educational and career problems. Participates in the training of residential life and other staff and encourages faculty and administrative participation in the campus counseling program. Plans and conducts research and prepares operational reports and analyses, identifying trends and student problems and recommending appropriate programs and solutions. Establishes long-and short-range departmental goals and objectives and devises methods to improve the overall effectiveness of counseling programs. Develops and submits budget recommendations, monitors, verifies, and reconciles expenditure of budgeted funds. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D in counseling/clinical psychology, counseling, or equivalent. In addition, individual should have five to seven years of experience in a clinical/counseling position. Supervisory and management experience is required.

Assistant Director of Counseling: (SL-5)

Serves as the chief assistant to the Director of Counseling in discharging the responsibilities of that office and supervises professional employees. Does related work as required. May supervise all the functions within the counseling center such as psychotherapy, educational, vocational, and personal counseling and testing services. In addition to his/her supervisory responsibilities, the incumbent may be a specialist in one of the above areas; may aid in special programs as designated by the Director of Counseling such as participating in the training of residential life or specialized programs with faculty and administration.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. in psychology or equivalent. In addition, an applicant should have three (3) to five (5) years of experience in clinical/counseling position. Supervisory experience is required.

Senior Counselor: (SL-4)

Serves as the lead counselor in developing and implementing mental health programs for the campus community including the provision of individual and group therapy and counseling to students, assessment interviews, referrals and consultation with faculty and staff around issues related to the developmental and psychological needs of college students. As the Senior Counselor the individual may be assigned more complex and difficult cases; may be required to coordinate efforts in certain functional areas within the counseling center; for example, personal counseling, educational, and vocational functions. Provides individual and short duration counseling to students seeking assistance with educational, vocational, personal or social problems; performs crisis intervention and consults or refers to psychiatric and/or medical resources as needed. Provides group counseling to students seeking assistance with educational, vocational, personal, or social problems; develops, trains, and participates with staff or students in presenting workshops to promote interpersonal and academic skills. Incumbent may supervise other counseling professionals and staff. Provides other professional services for the counseling center as identified in the description of Counselor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, or equivalent, plus two (2) to five (5) years of experience in a clinical/counseling position.

Counselor: (SL-3)

Provides group counseling to students seeking assistance with educational, vocational, personal, or social problems; develops, trains, and participates with staff or students in presenting workshops to promote interpersonal and academic skills. Provides assistance to specialized programs or to particular student groups as identified by the Director of the Counseling Center. Provides faculty and staff consultation and resources in their work with students and encourages their participation in providing students both individual and group assistance; develops workshops for the training of faculty in interpersonal skills. Develops training programs to promote staff development in counseling methods and techniques; participates in the initial and on-going training of residence hall and other appropriate staff. Researches relevant campus issues such as alcohol abuse, human sexuality, study skills, etc.; recommends and designs educational programs to assist students in their development in these areas. Assists in processing student withdrawals, leaves of absences, and re-admissions as directed. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in counseling, counseling/clinical psychology, or equivalent.

Associate Counselor: (SL-2)

Serves on the campus’ counseling center staff. Performs professional tasks under the direct supervision of the Senior Counselor, Assistant, or Director of Counseling Services. Incumbent may be assigned to a specific area within counseling such as vocational counseling, educational counseling; may be required to participate in training of residential life and other staff; may assist Counselor or Senior Counselor in the presenting of workshops to promote interpersonal and academic skills. performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, or other related field. A Master’s degree in progress is desirable.
