T.H. CLINICAL TECHNICAL SERVICES – TRANSPLANT
Positions charged with the responsibilities involved in candidate selection and organ retrieval in the hospital’s transplantation service within the appropriate laws and rulings that govern anatomical gifts and brain deaths, and to coordinate the activities of the medical teams that support the service.
T.H. CTS Transplant Senior Specialist: (SL-4)
Responsible for the around-the-clock provision of organ acquisition service and coordination with histocompatibility laboratory personnel and the perfusion personnel. Judgement input as to organs to be procured by the retrieval team; final judgement in educational programs for hospital/dialysis unit inservices, and programs directed to schools and general public, subject to review by Director at regular intervals; determines schedules for junior coordinators. Coordinates with hospitals to set times of organ procurement; plans for multiorgan retrievals and coordinates the teams for this purpose. Trains junior coordinators and teaches transplant fellows, medical and undergraduate students. Maintains monthly statistical reports of the disposition and utilization of organs retrieved for reporting to the Federal Government that impact on the status of the Transplantation Center as a provider of health care and reimbursement from Medicare; prepares supportive records for reporting organs retrieved to the New York Regional Transplant Program which impacts on reimbursement of shared organs; selects suitable candidates for transplantation and refers these candidates to the Director of the Transplantation Service for acceptance in the program, based on a general knowledge of the type and severity of disease, and as regards psychosocial evaluation, judgement on the part of the coordinator as to the ability of the candidate to care for and preserve the organ once transplanted. Maintains detailed and specific knowledge of laws and rulings, codified and non-codified that pertain to brain death, anatomical gifts, required request, establishment of Transplant Centers and Independent Organ Procurement Agencies (IOPA), sale of organs and medical examiner cases; general knowledge of the principles of organ perfusion for keeping organs viable for transplantation, and of histocompatibility testing as it pertains to the matching of donors with recipients. Specific knowledge of the records required by Federal and State government as for reimbursement of medicare dollars. Demonstrates extreme tact and diplomacy when approaching bereaved families for donation of relative’s organs. Works independently and directly supervises all junior Transplant Coordinators.
Preferred Qualifications:
Registered Nurse and two (2) years experience as a Transplant Coordinator; or Bachelor’s degree in nursing psychology, biology, chemistry, public health, health care administration and two (2) years as a Transplant Coordinator of Physician’s Assistant.

Uses judgement as to organs to be procured by retrieval team (when in doubt, the Director of the Service makes decision); uses moderate judgement in educational programs for hospital/dialysis unit inservices, programs directed to schools and general public (Senior Clinical Technical Specialist makes final decision); uses own judgement in working with hospitals to set times of organ procurement; decides organs to be procured; selects teams for various organ retrievals; prepares supportive records for reporting organs retrieved to the collaborating Regional Procurement facility which impacts on reimbursement of shared organs. Uses knowledge of the general principles of renal function and of blood and urine chemistries; specific knowledge of the Laws and rulings, codified and uncodified, pertaining to brain death, anatomical gifts, required request, establishment of Transplant Centers and Independent Organ Procurement Agencies (IOPA), sale of organs, and Medical Examiner cases; general knowledge of histocompatibility testing as it pertains to the matching of donors with recipients; specific knowledge of the records required by Federal and State government as for reimbursement of Medicare dollars. Demonstrates extreme tact and diplomacy when approaching bereaved families for donation of the relative’s organs. Works under general supervision of the T.H. Clinical Technical Senior Specialist.
Preferred Qualifications:
Registered Nurse and three (3) years experience as an O.R., I.C.U., Dialysis or Transplant Center Nurse; or a psychiatric social worker, or related fields; Bachelor’s degree in nursing, psychology, biology, chemistry, public health, health care administration and two (2) years as a Transplant Coordinator or Physician’s Assistant.
