T.H. OPEN HEART PERFUSIONIST

The positions in perfusion function as teams to set up, maintain and operate the cardio-pulmonary and related equipment which regulates the passages of blood or other fluid through a vascular bed during and after open-heart surgery.

T.H. Chief Open Heart Perfusionist: (SL-6)

Clinically responsible for the supervision of all procedures that require the utilization of intro and extracorporeal devices, i.e., various pumps, oxygenation devices and cardio support equipment, cardiac and vascular surgery as well as support for cardiac and pulmonary dysfunction. Maintains educational level at par with state-of-the-art technology as it develops. Participates cardiac surgery research. Involvement in education is a requirement. Administratively oversees the perfusion assistant, perfusionist, medical, surgical and nursing staff that are involved in long-term support and ancillary technical personnel; projects equipment budgets for disposable and capital expenditures. Does the performance evaluation of staff members, and meets on an administrative and clinical level with both staff and other medical facilities on intra and extracorporeal support.

Preferred Qualifications:

A.A.S. Board certification. At least five (5) years of on-the-job related experience of which two (2) years should be in a supervisory/administrative capacity.

T.H. Open Heart Perfusionist: (SL-5)

Works independently under the general supervision of the MD. Operates the cardiopulmonary by-pass equipment that is necessary for all surgical correction of various cardiac and vascular abnormalities; recognizes and instantaneously reacts to correct problems which may develop within the cardiopulmonary circuit. Must have sufficient knowledge and understanding of surgical procedures in process and understand what the surgeon is doing technically with regard to problems that may occur within the conduct of perfusion. Maintains supplies and equipment; supervises perfusionist assistant and students; gives inservice education instruction to medical staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

A.A.S., eligible for Board Certification. One (1) to two (2) years on the job related experience.

T.H. Assistant Open Heart Perfusionist: (SL-4)

Assists the primary perfusionist during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures. Monitors patient flows, pressures, temperatures, activated clotting times, blood gases and electrolyte values; sets up cardiopulmonary bypass equipment using sterile techniques; monitors the breakdown of equipment. Maintains disposable supplies and equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

A.A.S. degree, preferably in a health science such as biology, medical technology or chemistry.
