Television Engineer: (SL-4)

 

These positions are found only at the SUNY New York Network in one of three distinct areas of responsibility; transmission, production or maintenance.

Those positions in transmission are television technical operators and supervising master control switchers. They execute the daily program log and are responsible for playback and recording of television programs and evaluation of tapes for E.C.C. standards. They supervise student assistants and technical staff who operate cameras, sound equipment, lights, projectors and other equipment.

Those positions in production are designated technical director, video editor, audio mixer, or videographer and perform with a high degree of technical expertise, such tasks as electronic and special effects, audio mixing, camera and microphone placement, and videotape editing and make-up. These positions require a high degree of artistic ability in addition to sophisticated technical skills.

Those positions in maintenance require personnel with a high level of electronic engineering training and experience and familiarity with digital and logic circuit technology for purposes of installing, troubleshooting, and repairing the full range of television broadcasting equipment.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s degree in the field of electronics or satisfactory experience in commercial television broadcasting.

Associate T.V. Engineer: (SL—3)

Supervises TV Engineers, executes complex switching of leased terrestrial microwave system crosspoints to assure programming is routed to and from appropriate NYS Public Television Stations in accordance with the daily program log, ability to recognize, react to and correct technical difficulties to assure continuity of service. May also be involved in the operation of complex digital effects and video switching (wipes/dissolves/etc...) equipment, as well as computer based video graphics system. Overall team leader in production environment working with the video editor and audio mixer, or the field operation of television camera chain (video tape recorder, audio, lighting, etc...) producing field master videotapes that are ultimately edited by production crew. Requires high degree of artistic, as well as technical ability.

Other duties in this series may involve troubleshooting and repair of broadcast television equipment comprising in the entire New York Network television facility. Requires extensive background in electronics theory and application. High degree of accountability and ability to work relatively unsupervised. May also be involved in the operation of a sophisticated computer based videotape editing system which requires maintaining critical technical parameters to assure edit sessions with clients meet or exceed broadcast industry production standards, or the operation of a multi—channel audio mixing console maintaining proper audio levels for each production project. Controls proper audio parameters from various sources (sound of tape, sound effects, voice overs, etc...).

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

Bachelor’s degree and six (6) years of relevant experience in a broadcast television facility.

Assistant TV Engineer: (SL-2)

Assistant TV Engineers are skilled in executing the daily program log established by the nine stations. Responsible for playbacks and recordings of television programs, evaluation of tapes to ascertain conformance to FCC broadcast standards and duplication of high quality video tapes from various tape formats.

Set-up of broadcast T.V. tape recorders for playback and recording of television programming for transmission to NYS Public TV Stations, technical evaluation and duplication of videotape programs.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and one (1) year experience in a broadcast television facility performing technical functions.
