Chief Engineer (Maritime): (SL-5)

The Chief Engineer is found exclusively on the Maritime Academy training ship. The incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all ship’s machinery (power plant). He/She acts as second in command, reporting to the Commanding Officer of the training ship.

Typical duties include, but are not limited to: supervising the Engineering Department; insuring safe operation of the power plant and the satisfactory conduct/watchstanding of all Engineering Department personnel, including cadets on watch; insuring that all equipment meets both U.S. Coast Guard and American Bureau of Shipping standards; serving as a liaison with the Federal Maritime Administration and other agencies as required; maintaining current and complete vessel machinery/engineering records; responsibility for all fuels, lubricants, and spare parts required by the ship.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree and possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Chief Engineer of Steam Vessels License with unlimited horse power or a USCG License as Third Assistant Engineer (motor) and the requisite experience to comply with General order #87, Title 46 U.S. Code. In addition, military experience is highly desirable.
