STUDENT ACTIVITIES STUDENT UNION

Positions in this series are involved in the administration and the operation of student unions, centers,, and the services they offer to the campus community and/or an activities program which is carried on either within the student union or on the campus generally. Incumbents of these positions must have a thorough awareness of the social, recreational, and educational needs of students in order to provide a comprehensive program of extra curricular activities enriching the educational experience of the students.

Director of Student Activities/Student Union: (SL-5)

Plans and directs the management and program of the student union to ensure its efficient and proper use as an important educational resource of the college. The scope of the activities and the operation should be comprehensive and significant in size. Incumbent formulates policies and regulations concerning the use of the student union by students, faculty, staff and the community; approves and supervises the scheduling and use of various campus facilities for co-curricular activities; coordinates student union services; provides managerial and administrative support for programs both within and outside the student union; supervises professional, clerical, and support staff; manages the fiscal affairs of the student union, student activities, and related areas; supervises the planning, organizing, and functioning of various co-curricular activities. The incumbent frequently serves as the administrative representative and advisor to the student government; formulates policy in consultation with students, faculty and staff members as it relates to the activities program; supervises and enforces policies related to the recognition and operation of student organizations including SUNY Board of Trustees policies, campus regulations and other federal, state, and local laws; publishes various calendars, handbooks and other newsletters to inform the campus community of college activities. Incumbent often has primary responsibility for other related functions including orientation, intramurals, and recreation, conferences, cultural affairs, Greek affairs, major campus events such as Homecoming and Parents Weekend, convocations, volunteer services, leadership training and development, and commuter services.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree, preferably in student personnel or related area, with 5-7 years of progressive experience in the management and administration of a student union or student activities program.

Director of Student Activities: (SL-4)

Has overall responsibilities for the coordination of all student, cultural, social and organizational activities. Incumbent formulates and interprets policies and regulations; schedules and directs special events and provides related administrative and management support; supervises professional, clerical, and support staff; manages budgets and authorizes appropriate expenditures; provides leadership to student and faculty in planning, organizing, and executing various co-curricular activities, and frequently serves as the business officer for these activities assisting in such areas as budget preparation and making arrangements for use of various on and off campus facilities. Incumbent is frequently the administrative representative and advisor to the student government; formulate policies in consultation with student, faculty, and staff members as it relates to the activities program; may have responsibility for approving uses of mandatory activities fees; approves recognition papers as well as other documents related to student organizations; enforces policies such as the SUNY Board of Trustees policies and other related federal, state, local and campus laws; may prepare annual calendar of campus events; often responsible for other major programs such as the cultural series, convocations, Greek affairs, recreation, student travel and outing clubs, student publication, etc.

A Master’s degree, preferably in student personnel, with progressive experience in the management and administration of student activities or student union.

Student Activities Assistant Director: (SL-3)

Serves as the assistant or one of several assistants to the Director of Student Activities in the formulation of policies and procedures related to the campus activities programs. Incumbent assists in the conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and evaluation of campus wide leadership development and training programs; assists in the advisement, coordination, and evaluation of programs and activities of student organizations. May be in charge of a specific area within the student activities function such as the programming board or specific committees, advises the fraternities and sororities, or coordinates volunteer or commuter services; works with residential life staff to promote programming within the residence halls; may supervise other professional, clerical, or support staff; performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s Degree preferably in student personnel, with progressive experience in the management and administration of student activities or a student union.

Student Activities Associate: (SL-2)

Is responsible for a portion of the student activities programming as assigned by the Director or may direct the student activities program at a small campus; does related work as required. Works closely with various student groups as assigned such as orientation and freshman activities, student government; assist new student groups seeking to become recognized student groups; aids the Director in formulating policy as it relates to the activities program; may act as a staff assistant to the Director in an area of responsibility such as budget formulation or preparation of college calendar. Incumbent may assist in the training and supervision of orientation staff; assists in the planning, design, implementation and coordination of the parent and student orientation program; assist in the advisement, coordination, evaluation of programs and activities of the student organizations. May work with major campus student organizations with emphasis on programming groups; serve as a liaison with area institutions of higher education to exchange ideas and share bookings. Incumbent may assist in the development and design of written material distributed by the office. Assist in the coordination of college calendar; and perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree with one to three years of experience in student activity programming.

The entry level position in this series is responsible for student activities programming as assigned. Incumbent may assist in the preparation of budget and personnel matters relating to student activities; works closely with various campus organizations as assigned; may assist in student orientation; may assist in the development of written material distributed by the student activities office; performs professional tasks under the direction of a senior member of the staff. Employees may not attain permanent appointment in this title and can serve no more than two (2) years in this title.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree.

Incumbent is learning the professional tasks required and becoming familiar with the student union administration. Employees may not attain permanent appointment as a Student Union Assistant and can serve no more than two (2) years in the title.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree.
