Statement from Dr. Frederick E. Kowal, president, United University Professions, on Sept. 20 Day of Action for Global Climate Strike

“Today, the members of United University Professions were proud to join students from dozens of campuses in the State University of New York as they made a bold statement for their own future—a future which they refuse to surrender to the inaction of climate deniers.”

“Our students demonstrated leadership, courage and political will by standing with a global community of youth to demand a global response to climate change.”

“UUP members—the unionists who work with these students as SUNY faculty, staff, counselors and health care professionals—joined the rallies, marches and workshops that these outstanding young people organized. Today, these students were our instructors, and we learned some valuable lessons about how to take your future into your own hands to get something done.”

“UUP will continue to support action on climate change, which has been a policy of the union for many years. We see incredible potential in a partnership with SUNY and New York state to support the union’s climate-action goals. We are a partner in NY Renews, a coalition of activists on environmental issues, and we will be proposing strong ideas to SUNY and the state on how this great University can reduce its carbon footprint, as well as train the next generation of thinkers and doers in green technology and environmental policy”.

“We thank the SUNY students for their action, and we thank our members for turning out today.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
