Statement by United University President Frederick E. Kowal on today's Supreme Court’s ruling protecting gay and transgender workers

“UUP applauds the U.S. Supreme Court for ruling that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination of gay and transgender people. Simply put, gay and transgender people cannot be fired for their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“With this historic decision, the justices made it plain that there is no place and no tolerance for discrimination of any kind in the United States of America. This important ruling comes just days after the Trump administration unjustifiably ended protections for transgender patients in their dealings with doctors, hospitals and health insurance companies.

“At this most challenging time, today’s ruling is one of fairness and hope for millions of gay and transgender people across the country, who no longer have to fear being fired for being true to who they are. We stand with our LGBTQ+ colleagues and we celebrate this landmark decision with them.”
