Statement by UUP President Frederick E. Kowal on Sen. Charles Schumer becoming Senate majority leader

"United University Professions, the nation’s largest higher education union representing 37,000 employees at the State University of New York and its public teaching hospitals, congratulates Sen. Chuck Schumer in his new role as Senate majority leader.

"Sen. Schumer is a longtime friend to public higher education in New York. Most recently, he showed his staunch support of SUNY and the crucial services provided by our members by delivering $5.8 billion to New York’s educational institutions as part of the Education Stabilization Fund in the federal government’s COVID-19 relief bill approved in December.

"We are certain that Sen. Schumer will push for additional—and much-needed—COVID-19 relief for New York State, including for public education. We are confident that Sen. Schumer will continue to place public higher education at the top of his list of initiatives as majority leader.

“Sen. Schumer will bring principled leadership, based on compassion and accountability to the position of Senate majority leader. We look forward to working with him to create positive, progressive change for America.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
