ALBANY, NY - SUNY students are invited to apply for two annual scholarships offered by United University Professions, the union that represents academic and professional employees at the State University of New York.
The scholarship application deadline for the William Scheuerman Post-baccalaureate Scholarship is March 1. The deadline for the Steve Street Award is May 1. Applications for both awards are on UUP’s website, at uupinfo.org/awards.
The Scheuerman scholarships are one-time awards of $3,000 given to deserving full-time SUNY graduate students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, social justice issues and labor ideals. The award was created in 2010 to honor Scheuerman, who served as UUP president from 1993-2007.
Applicants must be full-time students enrolled at SUNY state-operated schools, completed at least 9 credit hours and have a minimum grade point average of 3.95. They must also demonstrate personal and academic achievement and display a strong record of community service.
The Steve Street Award is a one-time $500 scholarship given to an undergraduate student or group of undergraduate students enrolled at a SUNY campus who have created any paper or documented any project related to social justice issues or topics. This scholarship is available to full-time and part-time students.
The award is named for Street, a UUP contingent faculty member who taught at SUNY Brockport and SUNY Buffalo State College; he died of cancer in 2012.
The scholarships are funded by contributions from UUP members and their families.
