Statement from United University President Frederick E. Kowal regarding the shooting at SUNY Morrisville

What follows is a statement from UUP President Frederick E. Kowal. UUP is the union that represents faculty and professional staff at SUNY Morrisville.

“We are shocked and distressed by news of the shooting which took place on campus Monday afternoon as students attended classes and our members worked to provide them with a world-class education.

“Sadly, no community is exempt from senseless violence such as this. To meet their mission to transform lives, our colleges must be safe places for students to learn and for our members to work.

“There is no place for gun violence in America, especially on college and university campuses where students live and study and where our members work. As the nation’s largest higher education union, we abhor gun violence and we will do all we can to speak out against it and advocate for necessary change to make our campuses, our communities and our country safer.”

UUP is the nation's largest higher education union, with more than 42,000 academic and professional faculty and retirees. UUP members work at 29 New York state-operated campuses, including SUNY’s public teaching hospitals and health science centers in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse. It is an affiliate of NYSUT, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Education Association, and the AFL-CIO.
