Academic Advisement

As a family, the academic advisement series provides support to students with respect to academic planning, program, and course selection. Incumbents aid students in interpreting academic rules and regulations, such as prerequisites or other course requirements.

Director of Academic Advising: (SL-5)

Directs the academic advising function at a campus with a large or complex academic advisement program.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree. Significant experience in academic advisement and experience in management and supervision is required.

Senior Academic Advisor: (SL-4)

Either coordinates the activities of a work group of Academic Advisors, Advisement Assistants, and/r Interns or has a recognized advising specialty or expertise in areas such a pre-Law, or pre-Med advising, foreign student advising, Engineering advising, transfer advising, etc. Duties may also include administrative support to a Director.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree. Experience in academic advisement and some experience in supervision is required. Specialized knowledge or experience as appropriate is required.

Academic Advisor: (SL-3)

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: assisting students in academic planning related to the students’ abilities and interests; conveying and interpreting the University’s academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors and courses of study; may work directly with faculty in various schools or departments to enhance the advisement process; may refer students to related offices (psychological counseling, career planning, etc.) as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree. Significant academic advising experience is required.

Academic Advisement Assistant: (SL-2)

Serves on the professional staff of a campus advisement office. Performs tasks similar to that of an academic advisor but under closer supervision, due to relative inexperience and a lack of familiarity with the full range of campus programs. Probably does not make independent advisement decisions on other than routine matters.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree. In addition, it is desirable that a candidate have a Master’s degree in progress. With general experience in academic advisement or a related area.

Academic Advisement Intern: (SL-1)

Serves on the professional staff in a campus advisement office. Performs professional tasks under the direct supervision of a higher-level staff member. Incumbent is learning the professional tasks required and becoming familiar with campus programs and environment. This is the entry-level position in the series. Appointees may serve a maximum of two (2) years in this capacity.

Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree.
