T.H. LABORATORIES

These positions actively support the delivery of health care, research and instruction by performing analysis on blood components, other biological fluids and specimens using manual and/or automated means.

T.H. Technical Director Clinical Laboratory: (SL-6)

Plans, directs, controls and evaluates laboratory services. Responsible for the overall administration of the clinical laboratories. Establishes goals and policies, maintains state-of-the-art diagnostic testing procedures, insures quality assurance, prepares the budget; authorizes equipment purchases; oversees personnel matters. Responsible for continuing education, inspection and accreditation including NYS Department of Health, JCAH, AABB, etc. Insures proper Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement; serves as chief liaison with administration and management from other institutional department, and serves as a primary community resource (Appendix A).

Preferred Qualifications:

MS in Medical Technology, eight (8) years related experience to include three (3) years in a supervisory/administrative capacity, ASCP or equivalent required.

T.H. Clinical Laboratory Technologist I: (SL-4)

Works independently with consultative direction by laboratory management or laboratory director. Applies detailed specialized knowledge of scientific principles and their applications to perform advanced level testing in general or specific areas. Prepares reports which if improperly done, have a significant impact on finances. Routinely provides direct supervision to subordinate staff and students. Directly interfaces with medical staff and other department supervisors. Develops and monitors inservice and continuing education programs for staff. Insures adherence to proper quality assurance standards. Implements new programs. Determines performance programs and does performance appraisals of subordinate staff. Presents didactic lectures and laboratory sessions to medical, nursing, and health related professions, students, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

BS and six (6) years experience, M.S. preferred. Include two (2) years supervisory/administrative capacity required. ASCP or equivalent required.

T.H. Clinical Laboratory Technologist II: (SL-3)

Works independently with consultative direction. May assume the role of Lead Specialist/Shift Supervisor of the section/shift assigned. Applies detailed specialized knowledge of scientific principles to perform advanced level testing in specialized areas. Requires research and negotiation activities for major problem-solving and decision making. May provide direct supervision to subordinate staff and students for a section/shift. Presents didactic lectures and laboratory sessions to medical, nursing, and health related professions, students and staff. Under direct supervision, defines performance program and does staff performance appraisals.

Preferred Qualifications:

BS in Medical Technology. Six (6) years experience required, ASCP or equivalent preferred.

T.H. Clinical Laboratory Technologist III: (SL-2)

Under general direction of supervisor, plans own work and applies specific knowledge of scientific principles in a specialized field. Often performs independent problem-solving, decision making and troubleshooting. As necessitated by a tertiary care setting, performs advanced level testing with a moderate degree of specialization; a high volume of such testing exists in a tertiary-care facility. May provide direct supervision to students and subordinate staff. Routinely teaches methodology for higher level procedures to clinical and technical staff and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

AAS and five (5) years experience or BS and three (3) years experience required. ASCP or equivalent preferred.

T.H. Clinical Laboratory Technologist IV: (SL-1)

Under supervisor’s general direction, organizes own work, and applies specific knowledge in a specialized field or as a generalist in laboratory sections to perform technical procedures. Judgement is required for problem-solving. May provide direct supervision to students and participates in training and staff development and occasionally student teaching. The Technologist'’ responsibility is generally limited to the literal interpretation of such policies, protocols, procedures and methodologies, deferring those decisions which fall outside of prescribed standards to senior staff members. Performs technical procedures in one of the following areas: Hematology, Chemistry/Microscopy, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Immunology, Cytogenetics. Organizes own work, and applies specific knowledge in a specialized field or as a generalist in laboratory sections to perform technical procedures. Judgement is required for problem-solving. May provide direct supervision to students and participates in training and staff development and occasionally student teaching. The Technologist’s responsibility is generally limited to the literal interpretation of such policies, protocols, procedures and methodologies, deferring those decisions which fall outside of prescribed standards to senior staff members.

Preferred Qualifications:

AAS in Medical Technology and two (2) years experience, or BS and zero (0) to one (1) year experience. ASCP or equivalent preferred.
