T.H. PHYSICIAN’S ASSISTANT

The professionals who function in this group are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of commonly encountered medical problems. They thereby extend the physician’s capacity to provide medical care, freeing the physician to deal with more complex and emergent issues.

T.H. Physician Assistant I: (SL-5)

Functions as Physician Assistant in all aspects of patient care, including pre-operative, intraoperative and post-operative activities: Performs routine history and physical examinations; documents appropriate pre-operative orders; draws routine blood tests and takes samples for blood gas determinations; starts IV lines as needed. Scrubs and assists on all types of cardiac surgical procedures, including saphenous vein excision, wound closure and cannulation, under close supervision of Attending staff. Takes care of patients in Open Heart ICU, Neurology, Oncology Step-Down Unit and patient floors: prescribes and adjusts medications; removes drainage tubes; inserts IV catheters; draws blood tests. Responsible for timely and appropriate documentations, including progress notes and orders. Attends appropriate conferences and rounds; provides instruction to graduate students, and incoming house staff. Specific lines of supervision are provided by Physicians. May supervise subordinates.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degre, NYS license. Minimum of two (2) years in dealing with primary medical care or three (3) years in a general practice. Physician’s Assistant experience in surgical and/or intensive care setting preferred.

T.H. Physician Assistant II: (SL-4)

Assists physicians in all aspects of patient care, including pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative functions; may rotate in Open Heart Unit; monitors patients intra-operatively, post-operatively and in Open Heart Unit; assists in ordering of ancillary tests. Responsible for appropriate documentation, performs admission history and physical examination on surgery patients; may perform routine physical examination history on hospital employees; may perform routine physical examination on long-term open heart patients; performs special procedures including drawing blood, starting lumbar punctures, placement of indwelling arterial catheters, etc.; selects and orders appropriate tests and procedures in a logical fashion; maintains the currency and closure of medical records; attends appropriate conferences and rounds.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree, NYS license. Zero (0) to two (2) years experience.
